Eid’l Adha (November 27-28) not National Holiday

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

Maybe you’ve already made plans for the long weekend from November 27 – 30, right after you’ve heard about the happy news that Malacanang declared November 27-28, 2009 as national holidays, to commemorate the Islam feast Eid’l Adha. This was contained in Proclamation 1808. (more…)

EDSA People Power Anniversary on February 23, 2009: Holiday for Schools Only

Friday, February 20th, 2009

You may have known by now that February 23, 2009 had been declared as a national special holiday — but only for schools, both public and private. This means a regular two-day weekend for the rest of us. A big disappointment for those who are anticipating another long weekend. (more…)

Write a Good Resume and Prepare for the Interview

Friday, January 9th, 2009

Medyo hindi madali ang buhay ngayon. The U.S. recession undoubtedly affects everyone. Many family breadwinners may have found themselves trying to weather the existing financial storm. Many may be joining the job market fresh from school. Many may have unfortunately been the victims of job cuts and are now looking for new work. In either case, there may be two steps to take before landing a job — getting your resume out there and, if found interesting by a prospective employer, preparing for an interview. (more…)

January 2, 2009 a Holiday?

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

Update: I’ll be damned. Just a few hours from writing this entry and we’re updating it to confirm that January 2, 2009 was just declared as an additional special non-working holiday (Proclamation 1695). You could proceed to read the full update (click here) or still read the rest of the post below. (more…)

Official 2009 Holidays in the Philippines

Monday, December 8th, 2008

Vacations are generally welcome, for Pinoy Dads to relax or spend time with the family. There are a number of factors when planning a vacation. Others who want a more relaxed and not-so-crowded vacation would want to have it when others are not on vacation. One of the factors to consider, therefore, is the date of holidays, primarily on account of the “holiday economics” in the form of long weekends. Here’s the list of declared regular and national holidays for 2009 (unless otherwise indicated, the dates were fixed through Proclamation No. 1699): (more…)

Long Vacation in December

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

Aside from the Pacquiao-de la Hoya fight, there’s something else to look forward to this coming December 2008. No, it’s not the 13th month pay. It’s the fact that there’s a really long vacation this December. (more…)

October 31 2008 a Holiday?

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

There are a number of queries whether October 31, 2008 is a non-working holiday.  All Saints Day, already declared a special non-working holiday, falls on November 1, 2008 — a Saturday.  That’s why people are wondering if the day before (October 31) or the Monday after (November 3) would be declared as a holiday. Well, we haven’t heard of any proclamation on that matter. Not yet, anyway. Please proceed here for updates. (more…)

Extension of Maternity Leave Sought: What about Pinoy Dads?

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

There’s a bill filed at the House of Representatives. The bill (which refers to a proposed law, not a paper akin to a statement of account) proposes an extension of the legally-mandated maternity leave. House Bill 3973 is a bill seeking to increase “maternity leave benefits from 60 days to 120 days or four months.” (more…)

Fighting Work Burn-Out

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

I guess all of us experienced, at times, an emptiness which threatens to destroy our neat concept of ourselves and the world. This emptiness is not defined simply by the absence of purpose or the lack of interest in anything (or the apparent interest in everything), although this appears to be a manifestation of such mind-numbing state. We stop caring about anything and focus on that ever-increasing lump of inexplicable emotions weighing down our chests. What’s frustrating about it is not just the huge amount of energy needed to get out of this vicious cycle, but the inability to put a finger on what exactly it is. (more…)

The Rat Race and Downshifting

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

I wrote something about the fast lane, which is basically about slaving at work and the rat race. I never heard of the concept known as downshifting, until I read Lalaine’s article on the subject matter. I agree with her that downshifting primarily requires emotional and financial readiness. Nevertheless, the ultimate consideration is one’s contentment. Are we happy and contented with what we have now? When we achieve something, it’s almost certain that we will want more. Moving forward, it seems, is already programmed in our genes. Stopping and actually stepping back, on the other hand, is a decision that is extremely difficult to make. Here are some portions of Lalaine’s article: (more…)
