We noted in a previous post that wearing a seatbelt should come naturally to motorists, pretty much like bringing a cellular telephone or “cellphone”. This is specially true in the “text” capital of the world, the Philippines, of course. However, while bring a cellphone is only natural, drivers should be reminded that using a cellphone while driving poses a very serious risk — not only to one’s self, but also to others.
Using the cellphone while driving, whether making a call or sending/reading Short Messaging Service (SMS) or “text” messages, is dangerous. Studies have shown that drivers on cell phones are as bad as drunks, and hands-free cell phones are as distracting as handheld ones. The recommendation? “If legislators really want to address driver distraction, then they should consider outlawing cell phone use while driving.”
From the scale of things, this message from the North Luzon Expressway or NLE apparently reflects the fact (or is it?) that sending/receiving “text” messages while driving is more dangerous than a phone call. You think so? Because otherwise, carphones would not be a feature in some vehicles.
