Helping Us Help You: Looking for the Perfect Gift

Posted on 7 May 2008 in Relationships

I’m always thankful for the things that my wife had been helping me with. For instance, since I hate shopping, she helps me with my shopping chores, including hunting for the perfect gift. I guess men are simply no good in shopping and worse in looking for gifts. So imagine my relief when, as we were on our way home this evening, she told me that she found the perfect Mother’s Day gift (as you may already know, Mother’s Day is on May 11, which a few days from today).So, no shopping hassle for me. No time wasted in going around the mall. No energy spent in thinking about the perfect Mother’s Day gift — a lovely watch. For herself.

Every time she says “Thank You” to me for no apparent reason, I always feel a chill go up my spine. “Hon, thanks for the shoes.” I was puzzled the first time such words were spoken, because I didn’t buy her any shoes. On certain days she would say: “Thanks for the pants.” I didn’t recall buying her pants. Thanks for the bag. Thanks for the shirt. Thanks for the watch. I always say “You’re Welcome,” for how can I resist? She already bought the item.

I’m not complaining. No, far from it. This way, she wouldn’t feel bad that I forgot to give her a gift on a certain occasion. She chooses what she likes. I pay. The gift would be perfect, every time, as she’s the one who chose it. And the best thing is, I never forget giving her a gift.

Women should know by now that men are not wired to remember “special” events and go hunting for gifts. There are exceptions, of course, and I pray you’re with the exceptions among us men. There’s no harm about reminding your man about the special event (ok, you want him to be romantic and remember by himself, but I would always bet that you’ll almost always end up being disappointed). Help us remember. As that movie line goes: “Help me help you.”

Peace. =)
