January 2, 2009 a Holiday?

Update: I’ll be damned. Just a few hours from writing this entry and we’re updating it to confirm that January 2, 2009 was just declared as an additional special non-working holiday (Proclamation 1695). You could proceed to read the full update (click here) or still read the rest of the post below.

Original post: So many people want to know if January 2, 2009 has been officially declared as a non-working holiday, based on the number of online searches. Is January 2 a holiday? People have been asking if President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo already issued a Proclamation declaring January 2 a public holiday (and the rest of 2009 holidays). And for good reason.

January 2 falls on a Friday, sandwiched between a weekend and the long vacation from December 25 until January 1. In short, it’s only logical for those who want a longer vacation to expect a January 2 holiday. In fact, for the 5 days since a poll was opened (express your views here), asking readers if they prefer that January be declared a holiday, an overwhelming 70 votes (87.5%) favor a declared holiday.

We understand that Malacanang is consulting certain sectors on this matter. Whether President Arroyo issues a proclamation declaring January 2 as a holiday is out of our hands. Now, we can go back to our preparations for Christmas noche buena. Just come back for updates.
