Negosyo: Sagot sa Kahirapan?

Posted on 16 August 2008 in Work and Money

We’ve previously noted this tagline – “negosyo, ang sagot sa kahirapan.” Business is the answer to poverty (or maybe there’s another translation). At first glance, the logic behind this tagline appears to be simple. Successful entrepreneurs generate employment, reducing unemployment rate (although we are still to define who are Pinoy Entrepreneurs). Work for more people is a good sign of progress – although this may be too simplistic considering that economic gains may not necessarily trickle down to the poor.

On the other hand, this doesn’t seem to be the focus of GoNegosyo, but the cultivation of an entrepreneurial spirit among the people, embodied in this line: “Teach a nation how to fish, feed the nation many lifetimes.”

The purpose of this article is not for us to render an opinion on this matter. The purpose is to listen to everyone’s opinion.

Do you consider business as the answer to poverty? We’ve previously asked why many Filipinos are poor. Maybe it’s now time to ask if business is the antidote to poverty.
