It’s commonly referred to as the number coding scheme, although some still mistakenly call it the color coding scheme. For masochists, wanting to add pain by going the long way, it’s called the Unified Vehicular Volume Reduction Program or UVVRP. That’s the official label, by the way.

Since, I’m no masochist, let’s stick with number coding, which covers all private and public motor vehicles (including tricycles and motorcycles) going through all national, city and municipal roads of Metro Manila from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. during the corresponding days of the week.

This should come easy for Metro Manila drivers, but for those unfamiliar with the coding scheme, here’s the schedule (last digit of license plate and the corresponding day):

1 and 2 (Mondays)
3 and 4 (Tuesdays)
5 and 6 (Wednesdays)
7 and 8 (Thursdays)
9 and 0 (Fridays)

There’s a “window” wherein cars, even if subject of the coding scheme, are allowed to roam freely. The “window” is between 10 o’clock in the morning and 3 o’clock in the afternoon. Not all cities/municipalities, however, observe the “window,” and if you don’t believe me, try driving in Makati City, Pasay City, Malabon City and Mandaluyong.

Of course, weekends are not covered, as well as official public holidays. Also, while the coding scheme applies only in Metro Manila, some local government units, like Baguio City, have a similar version. So, as that commercial goes, ingat.
