A Sunday school teacher: was discussing the Ten Commandments with her five and six year olds.
After explaining the commandment to “honor” thy Father and thy Mother, she asked, “Is there a commandment that teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters?”
Without missing a beat one little boy: (the oldest of a family) answered, “Thou shall not kill.” (more…)

(This is something I wrote back in 1998, for my father, on father’s day. It was somehow filed in one of the folders at the office and I found this while preparing the folders for warehousing. Ito’y para na rin sa lahat ng mga Tatay.) (more…)

I guess all of us experienced, at times, an emptiness which threatens to destroy our neat concept of ourselves and the world. This emptiness is not defined simply by the absence of purpose or the lack of interest in anything (or the apparent interest in everything), although this appears to be a manifestation of such mind-numbing state. We stop caring about anything and focus on that ever-increasing lump of inexplicable emotions weighing down our chests. What’s frustrating about it is not just the huge amount of energy needed to get out of this vicious cycle, but the inability to put a finger on what exactly it is. (more…)

Just for this morning, I am going to smile when I see your face and
laugh when I feel like crying.
Just for this morning, I will let you choose what you want to
wear, and smile and say how perfect it is.
Just for this morning, I am going to step over the laundry, and
pick you up and take you to the park to play. (more…)

On the first day, God created the dog and said: “Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. For this, I will give you a life span of twenty years.”
The dog said: “That’s a long time to be barking. How about only ten years and I’ll give you back the other ten?”
So God agreed. (more…)

How often has it been said that you should spend time with, and treasure, the ones you love while you still have the chance. Still, while we nod our heads in agreement, we simply disregard it.
It’s the same thing as praying to God in happy times, or, if you prefer something farther from heaven, being in touch with your lawyer. We usually pray or call when there’s a problem. Sometimes, we call just in the nick of time. Sometimes it’s too late. (more…)

Office politics is a fact of institutional or corporate life. As long as organizations exist, office politics will always be there. On a neutral note, office politics is simply the relationship and interaction between and among co-workers (and, to a certain extent, with the bosses). The relationship should ideally be of mutual respect, and the interaction should be one of healthy competition. Unfortunately, office politics – just like general politics in our country – is viewed as something extremely negative. It’s present in any corporate structure and gets worse in bigger corporations. In other words, you can’t run away from office politics. Here are some points to remember in order to survive the office jungle: (more…)

When I first held my newborn son . . . this song kept on playing in my head. This is one of those times when I can truly say: “When the stars won’t shine anymore, I’ll be there”. (more…)

Hinding-hindi ko makakalimutan ang mga mumunti ngunit Ginintuang butil ng payo na nakuha ko sa aking mga magulang:
Si Inay, tinuruan niya ako HOW TO APPRECIATE A JOB WELL DONE — “Kung kayong dalawa ay magpapatayan, doon kayo sa labas! Mga leche kayo, kalilinis ko lang ng bahay.”
Natuto ako ng RELIGION kay Itay — “Kapag yang mantsa di natanggal sa carpet, magdasal ka na!”
Kay Inay ako natuto ng LOGIC — “Kaya ganyan, dahil sinabi ko.”
At kay Inay pa rin ako natuto ng MORE LOGIC — “Kapag ikaw ay nalaglag diyan sa bubong, ako lang magisa ang manonood ng sine.” (more…)

You may have heard others say: “God has a plan for each of us”; “You must fulfill your destiny”; “He is destined to be great”; “I am willing to go through this, if this is God’s plan for me”; or “I need a sign that this is God’s plan for me”. In short, there seems to be a predetermined end. However, I understand that one of Gods gift to mankind is Freewill (is it?). A predetermined end appears to be inconsistent with Freewill, for the end ceases to be predetermined if we are free to accept or reject it. On the other hand, Freewill is hardly free if, no matter what choice we make, we still end up with the same thing. (more…)
