Maybe you’ve already made plans for the long weekend from November 27 – 30, right after you’ve heard about the happy news that Malacanang declared November 27-28, 2009 as national holidays, to commemorate the Islam feast Eid’l Adha. This was contained in Proclamation 1808. (more…)

Friday, February 20th, 2009

You may have known by now that February 23, 2009 had been declared as a national special holiday — but only for schools, both public and private. This means a regular two-day weekend for the rest of us. A big disappointment for those who are anticipating another long weekend. (more…)

The Ruins of War: Corregidor Island

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

Corregidor Island is near Manila, just 48 kilometers west of the Philippines’ capital. Shaped like a tadpole, it’s 3 miles long and 1 ½ miles at its widest point. Yet, I would surmise that not a majority of Filipinos have seen this historic island. The difficulty in setting foot on Corregidor, while based on reasons other than economic, was experienced by the Japanese forces during the Second World War. Corregidor, the last to fall before the surrender to the Japanese, was heavily armed and fortified. It’s also one of the most heavily bombed islands on earth during the war. (more…)

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

A street party erupts every third Sunday of January. The annual Sinulog dance ritual is part of the celebrations to honor of the miraculous Santo Niño. Looking back, it’s quite unfortunate that in more than four years of staying in Cebu, I imbibed the mardi gras spirit only once. (more…)

Things I Hate About Christmas

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

I hate to sound like the Grinch, but there are reasons why we’re going to talk about not-so-pleasant things related to the Christmas celebrations. There’s no guarantee that these reasons are good. First, it seems that most would discuss what they love about Christmas, so maybe a change of perspective won’t hurt. Second, this is for fun. Since you’re invited to share what you hate about Christmas (please use the comment section below), you can’t really complain, can you? Here goes . . . (more…)

Official 2009 Holidays in the Philippines

Monday, December 8th, 2008

Vacations are generally welcome, for Pinoy Dads to relax or spend time with the family. There are a number of factors when planning a vacation. Others who want a more relaxed and not-so-crowded vacation would want to have it when others are not on vacation. One of the factors to consider, therefore, is the date of holidays, primarily on account of the “holiday economics” in the form of long weekends. Here’s the list of declared regular and national holidays for 2009 (unless otherwise indicated, the dates were fixed through Proclamation No. 1699): (more…)

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

I just remembered that there are two long weekends this coming August, as reflected in the list of National Regular and Special Holidays for 2008 in the Philippines. The declared holidays are: Ninoy Aquino Day (18 August 2008, which means that August 17-18 is a long weekend) and National Heroes Day (25 August 2008, which means that August 23-25 is another long weekend).
