Choosing a Destiny

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

This is an e-mail I sent to Mr. Jaime T. Licauco back in 2003. I am re-posting it here since it’s related to the previous post on Freewill vs. Destiny. (more…)

Karma and Justice

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

I momentarily paused while presenting a prosecution witness in a criminal case. What struck me was the witness’ answer when asked why she decided to testify (she first saw the victim when the incident happened; the victim died). She said that if she should be a victim, she would also want others to testify for her. (more…)

Driving Therapy: Going Away from the City

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

Getting up early in the morning for an out-of-town hearing is something to look forward to. Well, not particularly the getting-up-real-early part, but the thought the out-of-town trip. It’s always a welcome therapy. (more…)

Restraining Order for Pain

Friday, April 25th, 2008

At some point in our lives, we may experience unbearable pain, so unbearable that we’d welcome death to end it all. Many had succumbed, and many more will give in, to this temptation. (more…)

Death Comes to Us All

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

Death comes like a thief in the night. Man’s (and, yes, woman’s) quest for power – absolute power – is tempered by the fact that death, the greatest equalizer, comes to us all. (more…)

Embarassing Bubbles of Thought

Monday, April 21st, 2008

There are times when, all alone and for no apparent reason, you suddenly blush and just feel terribly embarrassed. A stray thought just casually floated into your conscious mind; a thought that you always wanted to erase, only that your sadistic mind has a funny habit of forcing you to remember it. (more…)

A Life Story: Pain, Love and the Iron Fist

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

(This letter is written by a law school classmate, a lady lawyer. This is reprinted here, with prior permission, since it contains kernels of thought that made me pause and think about my own life. The first half of the letter, which is as long as the unedited half posted here, had been deleted.) (more…)

The Rat Race and Downshifting

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

I wrote something about the fast lane, which is basically about slaving at work and the rat race. I never heard of the concept known as downshifting, until I read Lalaine’s article on the subject matter. I agree with her that downshifting primarily requires emotional and financial readiness. Nevertheless, the ultimate consideration is one’s contentment. Are we happy and contented with what we have now? When we achieve something, it’s almost certain that we will want more. Moving forward, it seems, is already programmed in our genes. Stopping and actually stepping back, on the other hand, is a decision that is extremely difficult to make. Here are some portions of Lalaine’s article: (more…)

The Explanation of Life

Saturday, April 12th, 2008

On the first day, God created the dog and said: “Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. For this, I will give you a life span of twenty years.”
The dog said: “That’s a long time to be barking. How about only ten years and I’ll give you back the other ten?”
So God agreed. (more…)

Guilt Trip: spend time with loved ones

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

How often has it been said that you should spend time with, and treasure, the ones you love while you still have the chance. Still, while we nod our heads in agreement, we simply disregard it.

It’s the same thing as praying to God in happy times, or, if you prefer something farther from heaven, being in touch with your lawyer. We usually pray or call when there’s a problem. Sometimes, we call just in the nick of time. Sometimes it’s too late. (more…)
