In a little over four months, we will have our national and local elections. Some personalities and certain events have made the 2010 elections very interesting. For one, there’s the ongoing issue on whether former President Joseph Estrada is still eligible to run. There’s also the increasingly heated exchange of issues between Noynoy and Manny. (more…)

I just remembered that there are two long weekends this coming August, as reflected in the list of National Regular and Special Holidays for 2008 in the Philippines. The declared holidays are: Ninoy Aquino Day (18 August 2008, which means that August 17-18 is a long weekend) and National Heroes Day (25 August 2008, which means that August 23-25 is another long weekend). Prices of gas (gasoline, diesel and other variations with high-octane ratings) are skyrocketing. The constant increase of gas prices is, to say the least, frustrating. When you pass by the gas station in the morning, you’ll often discover that prices were raised while you were sleeping. Consumers are constantly faced with balancing an almost stagnant income with a constantly-increasing fuel costs. (more…)

I heard the news when it broke out, but I wasn’t that bothered — until I saw the photos. 8 people died in a massacre in Calamba, Laguna. according to reports, “the gunman aimlessly rained shots at four separate residences.” In a separate incident, 10 people died in an RCBC bank robbery. “The victims were made to line up and shot in the head,” according to reports. Here’s a photo of the RCBC robbery-massacre. You’re warned about the graphic nature of the picture, so please proceed at your own risk. Note that all victims are made to lie down, with no gunshot wounds on their body — just the head, execution style. (more…)

As of this writing, there are a number of Philippine sites (not websites, but nature sites) among the Top 77 official nominees. These 77 sites are eligible for consideration by New 7 Wonder of Nature Panel of Experts for inclusion in the group of 21 finalist candidates. The Philippine sites in the Top 77 are (with their corresponding ranks): (more…)

Since yesterday, I felt something weird around our office. No, I didn’t see dead people walking around like regular people, although there’s someone — or something — who/which usually plays around with the lights of one conference room. It’s just that, well, there are less people around and less cars on the street adjacent our building (although traffic in EDSA was heavy last night – nothing new, really). Everyone is leaving, or has left, the city.

I was always excited every time the peryahan, which I believe is translated as a “fair” in English, comes to town. There’s the Ferris wheel, or something that resembles it, the caterpillar ride, the haunted house and, of course, the games. Looking back, there’s really nothing fancy about the perya, that is, if you compare it with the likes of Enchanted Kingdom. So, the first chance I got after it opened in 1995, I went to see this Enchanted Kingdom, and went back for more — perhaps proof that there’s always a child in each of us. (more…)

We noted in a previous post that wearing a seatbelt should come naturally to motorists, pretty much like bringing a cellular telephone or “cellphone”. This is specially true in the “text” capital of the world, the Philippines, of course. However, while bring a cellphone is only natural, drivers should be reminded that using a cellphone while driving poses a very serious risk — not only to one’s self, but also to others. (more…)

Here’s an email that’s going around lately. It’s originally entitled “How you can challenge petty abuses of MMDA personnel…”
I just reached my limit last week-end, and decided to take action against the abusive MMDA enforcers. I basically called up the MMDA head office and inquired from the Personnel Officer, Antonio Pagulayan, to clarify their policies. Here is what I got. (more…)
