The case of the Disappearing Milk

No, I’m not referring to an actual case, like someone stealing milk, although that could very well happen with the increasing prices of breast milk substitutes. I’m referring to something more intriguing — scary, even — happening at the market shelf.

In buying powdered milk for our son, we prefer the bigger cans because they’re relatively cheaper than the smaller cans. It’s just consistent with fact of cheaper prices for bulk purchases, although the “tingi” or sachet marketing strategy is necessary nowadays (something which is perhaps reflective of our economy).

Anyway, if you have a baby and you prefer the bigger cans, you’ll notice that bigger cans are flying off the shelves faster than smaller cans. That’s what I noticed, at least. Here’s the more interesting part — when these bigger cans disappear, it’s a sign of another round of price increase for these powdered milks. In other words, the next time these big cans appear, the prices are higher. You noticed? Or maybe it’s just me.

Ronnel, maybe it’s part of marketing strategy, as you mentioned. It’s becoming like gasoline…the next time you go to the gas station, the prices are different.
